We are raising money to convert the unused, former convent building on church property in the south side of Chicago into apartments, which will house pregnant mothers in need of support. It will cost $6.5 million to complete the project and set it on a strong trajectory for the first year.
We're renovating a 14,000 sq. ft., 3.5 story building on church property into a home for over two dozen families, complete with space for training and development. In 3 years, we hope to support mothers through their pregnancy and the first few years of their child's life, provide the case-specific care and support they need to be able to find work or start a degree, locate a home, and build a strong foundation for their family.
Our Building
Located at 5522 S. LaSalle St in Chicago, our building is conveniently placed at the intersection of a major avenue and the Dan Ryan Expressway. The Garfield Red Line Station is across the street, and buses to locations throughout our community run right in front of our property. The building itself was once a convent building, located at the rear of St. Anne's Parish campus, built in 1875. In 1971, the church was renamed St. Charles Lwanga and designated a Black Catholic Church. Our church bought the campus shortly after it closed down in 1990, and we've since used the rest of the buildings on the property to minister to the local community. Directly across the street from The Life House, the church operates a preschool for children from 6 weeks old to 5 years old.
